Introduction
To be honest, I used to be terrible at organization, with my room always in chaos. Clothes were tossed around carelessly, cosmetics and skincare products were scattered everywhere, and I couldn't even find a place for my bags. Every time I saw this mess, it drove me crazy, but within days of cleaning up, it would become messy again. Then one day, I discovered an incredibly practical organization method that helped me say goodbye to my messy days. I'm now sharing it with everyone, and I guarantee it will transform your room too!
Assess the Current Situation
Before starting, we need to understand exactly what we're dealing with on our "battlefield." I remember the first time I was determined to organize my room properly, I spent half an hour walking around with a small notebook. Don't think this step is unnecessary - it's crucial for saving you lots of time later.
I discovered many problems I hadn't noticed before. For instance, my closet was packed with clothes of various styles, yet I felt I had nothing to wear every morning; the kitchen was stocked with countless seasonings, but I could never find the one I needed while cooking; the bathroom had enough skincare products to open a small duty-free shop, but I only used a few items after each shower.
Then there was my desk - despite being quite spacious, it was always covered in miscellaneous items, making it difficult to even find space for my laptop. The bedside table was piled with books, magazines, headphones, and chargers, leaving no room even for a water glass.
These problems might seem minor individually, but collectively they made the entire room appear chaotic. So I suggest you also take out paper and pen, and record the problems in each space, following the order of bedroom, living room, kitchen, and bathroom. Be specific - vague descriptions like "messy closet" won't help much with later organization. Instead, write specific issues like "mixed seasonal clothes" or "can't find desired clothes."
Zone-by-Zone Strategy
After identifying the problems, it's time to plan your organization strategy carefully. My experience is: never try to clean everything at once. This approach not only makes it easy to give up halfway but also won't yield particularly good results.
Taking myself as an example, when I first tried this method, I focused on my most troublesome area - the closet. I really went all in, taking two days off work to handle this "major project."
First, I took out all the clothes and laid them on the bed. Wow, what a sight - I couldn't believe all these clothes were mine! Then I started categorizing by type: T-shirts, shirts, sweaters, jackets, pants, skirts... During this process, I discovered several pieces I'd completely forgotten about, some still with tags attached.
After categorizing, I further divided them by season. I placed current season clothes in the most accessible locations, while storing other seasonal items either away or in higher or lower closet spaces. During this process, I also cleared out many clothes that didn't fit, were outdated, or damaged, and donated them all to second-hand recycling.
The results after this organization were amazing! No more staring blankly at the closet every morning - I could find any piece of clothing instantly. Outfit combinations that used to take fifteen minutes now took just three minutes to put together.
This zone-by-zone organization method really works wonders. After organizing the closet, I gradually tackled my desk, cosmetics, kitchen... focusing on one area at a time until it was completely organized before moving to the next. Although the entire process took nearly a month, each area was thoroughly organized and easier to maintain.
Establish Habits
To be honest, when I first started establishing organization habits, it felt really troublesome. But after persisting for a while, I discovered these small habits could really improve my quality of life significantly.
Now I spend about ten minutes every night before bed doing a simple cleanup. I fold changed clothes and put them in the laundry basket instead of just tossing them aside. Used skincare products go back to their original places rather than being left scattered on the sink. Books on the desk need to be arranged neatly, used stationery returns to the pencil case, and snacks are either finished or put back in the storage cabinet.
These might all seem like small things, but when maintained consistently, the results are really noticeable. Now I never panic about not finding important documents, nor am I late because I can't find suitable clothes. My morning preparation time has shortened from an hour to thirty minutes, leaving extra time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast or even read a book or browse my phone.
Most importantly, these organization habits have greatly improved my mood. Returning to a clean and tidy home every day, seeing everything arranged in perfect order - that satisfaction is indescribable. Especially when work stress is high, a clean living environment can make you feel particularly relaxed.
Space Planning
Speaking of space planning, it's truly an art. Especially for young people like us living in big cities, where rental spaces are generally small, making the most of limited space becomes particularly important.
My wall space is a good example. Originally, the walls were completely bare, looking very empty, while the floor was cluttered with various items. Later, I bought some wall-mounted storage racks and hooks online, had the property maintenance staff help install them over the weekend, and instantly created much more storage space.
Now my hats, bags, and scarves all have dedicated storage spots. This not only makes the room look neater but also unexpectedly creates a boutique store atmosphere. Coming home to such an arrangement makes me feel particularly happy every day.
Besides wall space, I also paid attention to some easily overlooked areas. For instance, the space under the bed used to be stuffed with random items, but later I bought several storage boxes with wheels and neatly stored seasonal clothes and bedding there. The space behind doors is also very useful - I hung a multi-layer storage bag there specifically for shoes.
The organization inside the closet is also important. I added several dividers inside the closet so different types of clothes could be stored separately. I also bought some storage boxes specifically for small items like socks and underwear. Now when I open the closet, I see everything in perfect order, and never spend ages searching for things anymore.
Choose the Right Tools
When it comes to storage tools, there's really a lot to learn. At first, I thought any box would do for storage, but practice showed that suitable storage tools can make organization twice as effective with half the effort.
Take my recently purchased storage bed, for example. Although it cost more than a regular bed, the storage space underneath is incredibly practical. I store all my seasonal clothes and bedding in there, keeping them neat and dust-free. Most importantly, these items are very accessible - just lift the bed board and you can find what you want.
Drawer organization is also key. I use dividers in all my drawers, so small items like socks, underwear, and stationery don't become a jumbled mess. Now when I open a drawer, everything lies neatly in its own compartment, which is a joy to see.
Organizing cosmetics was also a major issue. I used to just stuff everything into drawers, resulting in frequent duplicate purchases. Later, I bought a transparent rotating storage box and categorized all my skincare and makeup products. Now when I'm doing my makeup, I just rotate to find the product I want, no more scrambling around looking for things.
Kitchen storage tools are equally important. I installed some drawer-style storage racks in the cabinets, so seasonings and utensils can be stored neatly. I also bought some airtight jars to divide large packages of seasonings, which both keeps them fresh and saves space.
The bathroom also uses some practical storage tools. For example, those wall-mounted storage racks that stick to the wall - no need to worry about them falling, and they're waterproof and moisture-proof, perfect for bathroom use. I also bought a multi-tier storage cart that can be moved wherever needed, which is very convenient.
Continuous Maintenance
To be honest, maintaining a clean living environment really requires persistent effort. Organization isn't a one-time job but a process that needs constant adjustment and updating.
I now have a habit of doing a major cleanup of the entire room every season change. Reorganizing the closet, putting away what needs to be stored, taking out what needs to be used. During this process, I can also clear out items no longer needed, such as clothes that don't fit or are outdated, empty skincare bottles, expired cosmetics, and so on.
Besides regular major organization, daily maintenance is also important. For example, when buying new clothes, promptly clear out some old ones to keep the closet from getting too full. Used skincare products should be thrown away immediately, not kept taking up space. When receiving deliveries, unpack them right away and dispose of packaging waste instead of letting it pile up in corners.
I also regularly check if the home storage system is still suitable. Sometimes when lifestyle changes, the original storage methods might not be appropriate anymore, and that's when timely adjustments are needed. For instance, when I recently started working from home, I reorganized my desk storage, putting office supplies in the most accessible locations.
Actually, through these methods, organizing your room isn't as difficult as imagined. The important thing is to take the first step, then make changes gradually. Once you really start practicing these methods, you'll find life becomes very orderly, and coming home every day becomes a pleasure. A clean environment not only improves your mood but also increases your work and life efficiency. So, are you ready to start your organization journey? Trust me, when you see your transformed living environment, you'll definitely be proud of your decision!
